1A: Applying Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy

The elements of 1A elaborate on the importance of planning purposeful content for your students.

Elements:

  • Disciplinary Expertise

  • Pedagogical Content Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Interdisciplinary Relationships and Skills

Use in a Classroom: Creating a class point system (ex: Class vs. Teacher – if students are following directions, they get a point. If the teacher thinks the class is off task, the teacher gets a point.) This would keep the kids on the right track and motivate them to do what is expected of them.

1B: Knowing and Valuing Students

Knowing and Valuing your students shows your class that you care and you want them to learn not only the curriculum, but how to be a great person too.

Elements:

  • Respect for Students’ Identities

  • Understanding of Students’ Current Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of Whole Child Development

  • Knowledge of the Learning Process and Learning Differences

Use in a Classroom: On the first day of school, the teacher will throw a beach ball filled with questions written on it to someone in the class. Whatever question the student lands on, they can share with the class. Then the student will throw the ball to another student until the whole class gets to share. This allows everyone to connect with one another and learn more about each other. It also helps you as a teacher to learn more about each student and what is important to them.

1C: Setting Instructional Outcomes

Setting goals for students helps them stay motivated. As an educator, I need to make sure that every student is making progress.

Elements:

  • Value and Relevance

  • Alignment to Grade-Level Standards

  • Clarity of Purpose

  • Integration of Multiple Aspects of Student Development

Use in a Classroom: At the beginning of the unit or lesson, make a progress chart. When everyone has made progress or understood the unit, the progress will go up. This will make students feel engaged in their learning and give them a visual representation of the knowledge they are gaining throughout the year.

1D: Using Resources Effectively

Using resources that will allow for the students to learn hands-on, collaborate, and stay engaged in the lesson is a very valuable part of education.

Elements:

  • Instructional Materials

  • Technology and Digital Resources

  • Supports for Students

Use in a Classroom: It’s important to use both technology and paper when educating students. Not every kid is going to learn and be engaged with one or the other. I think creating an assignment that can be done both online and on paper would be best for student engagement. (Padlet and real sticky notes would be a good example of what to use for an activity that allows students the option to use tech or paper!)

1E: Planning Coherent Instruction

This component discusses the importance of planning lessons that allow for students to be engaged in their learning. Interactive lessons allow for students to comprehend what they're learning.

Elements:

  • Tasks and Activities

  • Flexible Learning

  • Student Collaboration

  • Structure and Flow

Use in a Classroom: Having flexible student seating is a great way to fuel student collaboration. If students have the option to sit where they feel the most productive and ready to learn, they will be more willing to engage in classroom conversations.

1F: Designing and Analyzing Assessments

This component discusses the value of making assessments that benefit students needs.

Elements:

  • Congruence with Instructional Outcomes

  • Criteria and Standards

  • Planning Formation Assessments

  • Analysis and Application

Use in a Classroom: Planning and preparing a Quizlet Live, Kahoot, GimKit, or other forms of practice tests are a great way to make students feel more prepared when test day comes around. This is another way to fuel classroom discussions and teamwork through technology.
