3A: Communicating About Purpose & Content

When teaching students, it is important to stress WHY a specific lesson is so important, rather than just teaching the content to be memorized.

Elements:

  • Purpose for Learning and Criteria for Success

  • Specific Expectations

  • Explanations of Content

  • Use of Academic Language

Use in a Classroom: Create a “goal” for each topic or content area you teach and write it on the board for the class. Leave the goal on the board until every student has mastered it. Showing WHY you are learning something is so much more important than just learning it to memorize more content.

3B: Using Questioning & Discussion Techniques

One of the most engaging ways to teach students is to use strong discussion techniques and host group discussions as a class.

Elements:

  • Critical Thinking and Deeper Learning

  • Reasoning and Reflection

  • Student Participation

Use in a Classroom: Quizlet Live is a great way for the class to participate in meaningful discussion amongst their peers. Each student will be put in a team to work on answering questions through discussion.

3C: Engaging Students in Learning

Involving every student in their education involves teamwork, collaboration, thinking, and reflection.

Elements:

  • Rich Learning Experiences

  • Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Use of Instructional Materials and Resources

  • Opportunities for Thinking and Reflection

Use in a Classroom: When I was in school, I understood content much better by doing hands-on learning activities. In my future classroom, I hope to be able to do hands-on learning in the classroom (instead of online!) Whether it be for a science experiment, or a math manipulative, I hope to have the resources available to be able to do it in person with my students.

3D: Using Assessment for Learning

When giving an assessment, students should feel success.

Elements:

  • Clear Standards for Success

  • Monitoring Student Understanding

  • Timely, Constructive Feedback

Use in a Classroom: In my classroom, I want my students to feel prepared and confident on test day. I plan on implementing this in my classroom by giving my students practice tests and online study activities in order for them to feel prepared and ready to excel.

3E: Responding Flexibly to Student Needs

Every student learns at a different pace, along with a different method. As a teacher, it is important to adapt to your students needs to help them learn to the best of their ability.

Elements:

  • Evidence-Based Adjustments

  • Receptiveness and Responsiveness

  • Determination and Persistence

Use in a Classroom: I plan to respond to my students' needs by making myself available at all times during my days at school. If a student needs my help, I never want them to shy away from coming to me for help. I want them to always know that I am willing to drop everything and have a conversation with them, because at the end of the day, my students are the most important thing about my job.
