Formative assessment can be used throughout a lesson in order to check your student's level of understanding. Formative assessment can be as simple as walking around the classroom and seeing if students are struggling, to playing a fun, interactive game to see if student's are gaining knowledge on a lesson. The goal is to make sure students are progressing throughout the lesson. This week I learned about various types of formative assessment to use in the classroom. Some of my favorites include Blooket, Flip, EdPuzzle, and Google Forms.
BLOOKET: Blooket is an engaging, game-based form of assessment that has hundreds of game options. Students respond to questions to gain points within the game. This is an excellent option for review, homework, or quiz.
FLIP: Flip (also known as Flip Grid), is a free, interactive platform that allows students to post video responses to a teacher-led question. Students are able to edit up to 10 minutes worth of content and post comments on other students' videos in their class. The teacher is able to monitor the content and review their responses to assess students' knowledge of a concept.
EDPUZZLE: EdPuzzle is one of my favorite sources of formative assessment. Teachers can make videos for their students to watch with questions throughout the video to check for understanding. EdPuzzle keeps students engaged by not allowing students to move on with the video until they have answered the question. Students immediately receive their score once they finish the video and teachers can see what questions students get correct and incorrect.
GOOGLE FORMS: Google Forms is a simple way to check progress throughout your classroom. Teachers can create quizzes that feature multiple-choice, and extended-response questions. One of the best parts about Google Forms from a teacher's perspective is how it displays your class's data. You can easily see how well a student did individually on a question and how well your class did as a whole.
Formative assessment is shown throughout the Danielson Framework for Teaching and is a common strategy used in the field of teaching. I highly recommend taking a look at these sources for FREE formative assessment.
